How to highlight your soft skills in your CV and cover letter


For many, a CV revolves around the hard facts. This is where you list all your education, training and work experience. It's how you demonstrate that you have the right knowledge and experience. But you have so much more to offer! So-called 'soft' skills are beneficial for every job. These are the less precise qualities. For example, good people skills, the ability to think critically and always meeting deadlines. These are the skills that make you stand out among the hundreds of application letters. So make good use of them! The only question is: How do you make your soft skills the star of your CV and cover letter? They're difficult to prove.

Presenting your soft skills

Want to incorporate your soft skills into your CV or cover letter? Then it's important to make them concrete. Do this by dividing them into three parts:

  • How did you develop your soft skills?
  • How did you apply them?
  • What was the result?

Get to the point in your CV, so only describe soft skills that are clearly relevant to your desired job. Write them down point by point, keeping them organised and concise. You can expand a bit in your cover letter. For example, you can discuss a case from your previous work. Explain how you've successfully applied your soft skills in the past. This immediately gives recruiters a concrete impression of your natural characteristics.

Still have doubts about your soft skills?

It can be hard to figure out which soft skills you have. You won't receive a diploma for it. Therefore, it's important to kick it all off with a thorough self-reflection. Examine yourself critically: what are your strong and not so strong qualities? It's often easier to recognise your pitfalls, because these cause you the most strife.

Remember to think about out what you excel at: are you a real team player? Or are you effortlessly flexible? These are perfect soft skills that employers like to see. If you still don't know, you can call in a helpline. Ask your current or former co-workers if they have any suggestions. They see you at work every day, so they know better than anyone where your qualities lie. They may be able to give you concrete examples to use during your job interview. So don't be afraid to ask questions!
