Want to earn some extra money? Flexi-jobs make it possible!

Jobs

Do you have a job but would like to earn some extra money without being taxed on it? Or are you retired and not (yet) ready to sit at home? With a flexi-job, you can take on extra work quickly and without limits, on favourable terms. All you need to do is find a vacancy that suits you!

What are flexi-jobs?

Flexi-jobs were introduced at the end of 2015 to enable employers in certain sectors (hospitality, retail) to hire staff more flexibly in a tax-efficient manner and to ensure that more employment arrangements are formalised and transparent.

Over the years, the flexi-status has been extended to numerous other sectors. A full overview can be found here: https://myflexijob.be/sectoren-flexijobs/

How cost-effective is it?

Very cost-effective! With a flexi-job, you can earn extra income on top of your regular job or your pension. Anyone who takes on a side job pays no taxes or social security contributions on that extra income (for employees: capped at €18,440 for flexi-income in 2026 – retirees may earn unlimited extra income). So your gross pay equals your net pay!

Plus, you build up social benefits (vacation, pension, unemployment benefits). How much you earn per hour depends on the sector. Only in the hospitality industry is there a minimum flexi-hourly wage of €12.78 (including flexi-vacation pay). Employers can also benefit from a favorable tax rate when hiring flexi workers.

Am I eligible for a flexi-job?

To be eligible to work as a flexi, you must meet certain requirements:

  1. You must have worked at least 4/5 of the time for another employer three quarters ago. This requirement is reviewed every quarter.
  2. You cannot work as a flexi if you are self-employed.
  3. If you are retired, you must have been registered in the pension registry two quarters ago, regardless of your age.

If this is not the case, you must have worked at least four-fifths of the time two quarters ago.

Can I work anywhere?

Flexi-jobs are now available in many different fields. While the system was previously best known in the hospitality industry and later in retail, the range of opportunities has expanded significantly over the years. Today, flexi-jobbers can also be employed in sectors such as sports, movie theaters, the performing arts, and music (with the exception of artistic roles), as well as in parts of the healthcare sector.

Since 2024, the scope of application has been expanded even further. As a result, as a flexi-jobber, you can now also work in sectors such as education, childcare, the public sports and culture sector, agriculture and horticulture, bus and coach transportation, the automotive sector, the food industry, the funeral sector, the moving sector, driving schools, the events sector, and the real estate sector.
